10 Non-Toxic House Plants Safe for Kids and Pets
House plants are beautiful additions to your décor, but are they safe for your precious children and pets? Today, I’m sharing 10 non-toxic house plants that are safe to have around them both!
Truth be told, I haven’t given the toxicity of my house plants any thought…until Emmy came around. She’s been quite the explorer, and while I love her curiosity, it’s about given me a heart attack multiple times. She put her tiny little fingers into the dirt of a plant, and started to dig. Obviously this sent me on a search of some of the best houseplants to have around kids. I’m rounding up 10 non-toxic houseplants to share with you today. Plus, a little growers pot upgrade I gave my fiddle leaf fig…(which is mildly toxic to pets, by the way!)
1. Boston Fern
When I think of a Boston Fern I immediately think of front porch sitting and iced tea sippin’ weather. Nothing screams summer to me more than seeing a Boston Fern hanging from a porch. Why not bring that little touch of summer inside, and enjoy this non-toxic house plant year round. After I read they were non-toxic, I brought mine in, and plopped it in a crock. They do prefer humidity and lots of bright, indirect light, so keep that in mind when you’re looking for the perfect spot.
2. Polka Dot Plant
While I don’t have one of these, it is definitely on my “plant wish list”. I think they are darling, and would make such a lovely, safe addition to any décor. Grow a polka dot plant in a bright or medium-light spot.
3. Peperomia
Another variegated beauty is peperomia. I’ve read that it is one of the easier small houseplants to grow, and loves medium light or a nice bright spot.
4. Baby Tears
I love this sweet little plant knowns as baby tears. It’s a fast growing plant that lives in the rainforest. It’s a ground cover type plant and does well in a terrarium. I’ve read that in the right climate it can become invasive if planted outside. Best to keep it in a pot indoors!
5. Spider Plant
I’ve had my fair share of spider plants over the years. Unfortunately many didn’t make the move well, but when they were thriving they were THRIVING. They tolerate a wide range of light, moisture, and humidity. Really, a very versatile non-toxic plant to add to your collection. I’ve also read they’re very good at filtering out indoor air pollution. They’d make great additions to bedrooms and offices because of this!
6. African Violet
Admittedly one of my favorites. My great grandmother was a superb African Violet grower, and I’ve heard that she had a beautiful collection of several different types. I have two that grace my kitchen window seal. They thrive in bright, warm, and humid climates.
7. Gloxinia
I’ve read that if you can grow African Violets that you can grow Gloxinia. They come in many shapes and colors, and love indirect light and constant moisture.
8. Prayer Plant
This plant is unique. It’s leaves are flat during the day, but fold up like praying hands at night. How cool is that!? I’ve read they’re not very easy to keep growing long term. They need indirect sunlight, and consistently moist soil.
9. Rosemary
Rosemary can be a little tricky to keep alive indoors, but it is a lovely, fragrant addition if you can. I’ve successfully kept many rosemary plants inside through the winter months with light watering, and plenty of sunshine.
10. Fittonia
Fairly easy to care for, and low growing make this a great addition to any room. They do well in a variety of lighting conditions, and love to be kept moist.
I’ve been slowly replacing a lot of the faux greenery with real plants. They’re extremely beneficial to the air, and they’ve actually been proven to reduce stress! With this handy list of 10 non-toxic house plants, I have plenty of ideas I wat to try to grow. Do you have any favorite houseplants? I’d love to know what you love to grow.
As always, thanks so much for spending a tiny part of your day with me!
