5 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Look Less Cluttered
Overwhelmed by the clutter in your home, and need to streamline the feel quickly? Today I’m sharing 5 easy ways to make your home look less cluttered!
I don’t know about you, but clutter stresses me out. It suffocates me. It nearly makes me feel paralyzed. True story. I didn’t really recognize it’s deep affect on me until I started getting rid of it. (You can read more about that here: Why I’m Pursuing Minimalism + How It’s Going So Far) Maybe you’ve been feeling a little on edge with your home lately, too. Perhaps you don’t have time to do a full deep declutter. Today I’m sharing 5 easy ways to make your home look less cluttered instantly…without hiding mountains of stuff in closets.
1. Clear the kitchen countertops!
I’m probably going to sound like a broken record here, but it’s for a good reason. Clearing off your kitchen countertops is HUGE when it comes to making your home look and feel more streamlined. Countertops tend to fill up quickly in our house. I have to stay vigilant in the fight against clutter. The only difference in these two photos is that the countertops are cleared off. I did no additional cleaning! So if your house is feeling a little more cluttery (probably not a word, but I’m going with it.) than usual, go clean off those countertops…and be ruthless. Consider your countertops the most valuable real estate in your home. In order for an item or object to earn it’s own spot on the countertop it must be something you love, or use frequently. I even put our toaster oven in a cabinet. We just pull it out when we need to use it, and slide it back in the cabinet when we’re done.
2. Do the dishes!
Nothing screams louder than a sink full of dirty dishes. Isn’t is amazing that our kitchen can be sparkling clean minus a few dirty dishes, but those few dishes make the whole kitchen look like a wreck. Washing the dishes, or putting away the clean ones (admittedly, something I still struggle with!) makes a big difference in the way your kitchen feels. If your sink is overflowing, try scrubbing those pots. I guarantee you the kitchen will feel less cluttered when you’re done.
3. Reassess your wall art.
If you’ve purged all the nooks and crannies, but the house still feels too full, try taking down some of the wall décor. Too many pictures and photos on the walls will most definitely make the room feel “heavier”. If you’re not ready to donate the wall art, try using the quarantine box method with them. Simply pack them away, out of sight out of mind. If you miss them, no harm done. You can unpack them and rehang. If you don’t, you know they’re safe to donate. Such a genius concept. If you want to learn more about this idea, look up the Minimal Mom on YouTube. Her videos always motivate me to get rid of just a little bit more.
4. Make your bed!
Now, I know some of you will fight me on this, but…if your bed isn’t made it should be. I did nothing extra in the photo on the right except make the bed. Make. Your. Bed. Trust me on this. It’s the same concept as the dishes. The entire bedroom can be spotless, but if the bed isn’t made it doesn’t matter. For all you skeptics out there, you know who you are, try it for a week. See if it makes a difference. I’m pretty sure it will.
5. Clear off the fridge.
You’ve done your dishes, you’ve cleared your counters, but something STILL isn’t right. Try clearing off the clutter on your fridge. Such a tiny change, such a huge impact. Instead of layering all the reminders, receipts, and artwork on the fridge try creating a home management station or a command center. There are tons of great ideas on Pinterest. Your reminders will have a proper home, and your fridge will be so much less distracting. Clearing off the fridge will make the whole kitchen instantly streamlined.
I hope these 5 easy ways to make your home look less cluttered help! Sometimes it really is the little things that make the biggest impact. As always, thanks so much for spending a tiny part of your day with me. Talk to you soon!
Listen, sister. You’re one of my favorite people but I will fight you to the end of times in this bed making nonsense. Hahahaha!
You are the person I was writing that paragraph to…hahaha
