Why make your own?
By making your own foaming hand soap you can completely control what’s inside. Many store-bought versions are loaded with artificial fragrances and dyes. Both are things we try to avoid. Making my own has allowed me to use three simple ingredients, and the same mason jar for years and years.
How to make your own.
It is SO simple to make your own hand soap, and once you realize how simple, you’ll be hooked. All you need is:
- 1/4 cup castile soap (I use this one)
- 10-15 drops of essential oils (I’ll share my favorites below)
- water
- foaming soap dispenser (we have these, but when I first started, I saved the plastic foaming soap dispenser from the store.)
Instructions:
- Begin by adding the castile soap directly into your foaming soap dispenser. I use a funnel to prevent spills, but if the top is wide enough on your container, just pour it right in.
- Next, add in your essential oil. (note, the fragrance is optional, and the soap will be just as effective without it)
- Finally, top it off with water, leaving about a half inch of space at the top.
- Secure the pump top and shake well!
Favorite Essential Oils for Hand Soap
Lemon– Lemon has cleansing and purifying properties, making it perfect for getting your hands clean. There’s something about lemon that just makes me think of “clean”. I enjoy using lemon soap in the kitchen especially.
Wild Orange – Wild orange also has cleansing and purifying properties. I love to mix lemon and wild orange together for a bright, clean foaming hand soap.
Lavendar – Lavendar has cleansing properties and is excellent for sensitive skin. In addition, it gives off a calming and relaxing scent that can promote overall relaxation and calmness. I use Lavendar essential oil daily.
Tea Tree – Melaleuca (or tea tree) is a great essential oil for cleaning; it will cleanse the skin and purify the air.
Germ Fighting blend – I especially like to use a germ fighting blend in our soaps during cold and flu season.

A few notes about this soap:
- This soap stores well in plastic or glass and has a good long shelf life. We tend to go through quite a bit of soap, but one bottle usually lasts about a month here.
- This doesn’t leave any slimy or filmy residue on your hands.
- Essential oils are optional. This soap works just as well without the fragrance from the essential oils.
- Foaming hand soap is just as effective at washing away germs and dirt and uses less soap than traditional pump soap.
As I mentioned in the beginning, I firmly believe that an all-natural home doesn’t have to be difficult to attain. We tend to overcomplicate most things in life, don’t we? If you want to make some more natural changes, I suggest starting with this hand soap, which can also double as a nice dish soap, and my favorite all-natural multipurpose cleaner: How to Make All Natural, All Purpose Cleaner. I really have used that spray cleaner on every surface in our home, and always get good results.
I especially like that it isn’t vinegar based. Really, I don’t mind the smell of vinegar, but I will admit that I get tired of the whole house smelling like it when I’m done cleaning. I really enjoy using castile soap as a base.
I’d love to hear from you. Do you make your own hand soap or cleaning products?
As always, thanks for spending a tiny part of your day with me.
