Do your wooden spoons look dull and lifeless? It happens, ya know? What’s a girl going to do? She’s going to whip up a batch of this wooden spoon wax, and breath new life into her favorite utensils, that’s what.
I use my wooden spoons a LOT. Every day, multiple times a day. They see a lot of action in this farmhouse kitchen. I like to keep them ready to use by giving them a good waxing every now and then. They soak it right up, and look as good as new.
This isn’t JUST for spoons though, you can use it on anything wooden in your home…spoons, cutting boards, rolling pins, etc.
This is so easy to whip up using only beeswax and coconut oil. It doesn’t take very much time or effort either. I think it would make a wonderful gift idea with a nice set of wooden spoons, and a cotton cloth.
What you’ll need for Wooden Spoon Wax
- A small jar for storing
- 2 TBS Beeswax pellets
- 6 TBS Unrefined Coconut Oil
- 8-10 drops Lemon essential oil, optional ( I love the way coconut oil and beeswax smell, so I don’t add it. I’ve done it before, and it does smell nice and fresh!)
- A small saucepan
Instructions
- Place beeswax and coconut oil in a small glass jar.
- Place the jar in a small saucepan filled about 1/3 of the way with water.
- Set on a burner over medium-low heat, and stir the wax mixture occasionally until it is completely melted.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and add essential oil if using. Stir to incorporate. Let it cool completely before remove the jar from the hot water.
- Apply a generous lather to your wooden spoons, cutting boards, rolling pins, or unpainted wooden handles
A few tips for wooden spoon care…
- Never EVER put your wooden utensils in the dishwasher.
- Don’t let them soak! It can make them dry, crack, and splinter.
- If they start to splinter, you can take a fine grit sandpaper and lightly sand them. Just make sure to lather a generous layer of wax on afterwards.
- Make sure to towel dry them as soon as they’re hand washed. Moisture is the enemy here, if you haven’t noticed.
Much like cast iron, wooden spoons require just a tiny bit more care than silicone or plastic utensils, but they are WORTH IT. By using this wax recipe, and those few little tips above, your wooden spoons will quickly become your most prized utensils, and they’ll last a lifetime!
