How to Know If Minimalism is Right For You

Tired, overwhelmed, and stressed out? Keep reading. Today I am helping you discover if minimalism is right for you!

Minimalism is a broad term. It can mean a variety of different things to a variety of different people. For me minimalism can be summed up in the simple phrase, “less is more“. Less stuff equals more time for the things I want to do. In all transparency, I’m in no way a “perfect” minimalist. In a lot of people’s definition I wouldn’t be considered a minimalist at all. None of that matters to me because I know the transformative power of highly simplifying my home. I’ve seen what it can do, but better yet, I’ve experienced what it does. That sounds great, right? But how do you know if minimalism is right for you?

As with anything, minimalism isn’t right for everyone. That’s ok, and that’s what this post is all about. I want to help you decide if this simplified way of living is right for you.

1. You’re overwhelmed by the mess in your home. It never seems to go away, no matter what you do!

This was me. 100% me. I’d clean ALL day, and it would STILL be a mess. Every. Single. Day. Maybe this sounds familiar to you, too. If so, start by clearing out junk drawers, sorting through old mail, and decluttering highly used areas. Get rid of anything that’s rarely used, or appreciated.

2. You’re running out of space.

Before I started decluttering, I told my husband that we needed a bigger house. Bigger than the 2,500 sq feet that we already live in. Why? Because closets, cabinets, and crannies were shoved full of things we no longer needed. (or didn’t need in the first place!) Do you feel like your rooms are shrinking, and you NEED more space? Maybe it’s time to start simplifying your home!

3. No motivation to clean.

Now, cleaning is not my favorite past time, BUT there was a time not so long ago that cleaning was futile. NO matter what I did the house was a mess. Eventually even doing the necessary things felt pointless. I had absolutely no motivation. The funny thing about decluttering is when you see a difference, you surely don’t want the space to become a mess again. If you’re lacking motivation to clean up maybe it’s because you need less to clean!

4. Your house is full, but you still want more.

We are all bombarded every single day with hundreds of advertisements. We are constantly being told we NEED more stuff. Does this scenario sound familiar? you tell yourself, “if I just had a new rug, I’d be happy with the living room….” You buy the new rug, but it doesn’t quite make the change you’d hoped for. The next day, you set out to find new artwork. You’re sure the artwork will fix the room. Once the artwork is hung, you realize it’s not the rug or the artwork, it’s that old couch. If you just had a new couch…It’s a vicious cycle that we all fall prey to. Minimalism can (and should be) a mind set change. When we realize that stuff doesn’t make us happy, we’re a whole lot happier.

5. You feel the need to escape from your home.

Granted there are times it’s great to get away from the house, but home should be your haven. If you find yourself going out shopping just to avoid that mess at home, minimalism may be a good fit for you.

Can you relate to any of these points? If so, minimalism may be right for you! I’ve written several posts about our journey to minimalism. You can read those here:

I am definitely not an expert…on anything really…but I can tell you that since we began this journey to minimalism, life has been a whole lot simpler. If it’s simplicity you’re craving, I implore you to take a look at minimalism, and at the very least, finally declutter that closet!
