A Farmhouse Rich in History

Leslie’s home is more than just a house; it’s a piece of her family’s history. Her farm has been in the family since the mid-1800s, when her great-great-grandfather purchased the property. Imagine the stories those walls could tell! Over the years, Leslie and her husband have lovingly restored the farmhouse, transforming it into a cozy, inviting space that’s bursting with charm.

Picture this: a quintessential farmhouse with a wraparound porch, nestled on a historic family farm. It’s the kind of place where life slows down, and every detail seems to whisper the words “home.”

Leslie pours that same sense of warmth and love into her homemaking. Whether she’s baking in her kitchen or tending to her family, she creates a home filled with care and intention. It’s no wonder her recipes reflect that same nurturing spirit.

The Recipe: Honey Oat Yeast Bread

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 TB butter, melted
  • 2 ts. seal salt
  • 1 pk dry instant yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F)
  • 5 1/2 cups bread flour + additional for kneading
  • egg wash and oats for topping

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl mix the boiling water, oats, honey, butter, and salt. Let stand for 1 hour. (This is important!) Butter a large mixing bowl and two loaf pans. Set aside.
  2. After one hour, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Stir well.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the oat mixture. Add 5 1/2 cups of flour and stir until dough forms.
  4. Turn onto well floured surface to knead. Add additional flour as needed while kneading.
  5. Knead for 8-10 minutes or until a ball forms and becomes smooth and elastic.
  6. Rub the top of the dough with butter and place in the prepared buttered bowl. Cover and let rise for about 40 minutes or until doubled.
  7. Punch dough down and divide into two halves. Flatten dough and shape each half into 12×10 rectangles. Roll into loaf and place in pans.
  8. Let rise in a warm place until nearly doubled.
  9. After the second rise brush the top of the loaves with the egg wash and sprinkle with oats.
  10. Bake at 350 F for 27-30 minutes.
I took a little “creative liberty” and use whole wheat flour. Don’t tell Leslie 😉
