How To Make Dry Shampoo with Essential Oils
Using a few simple ingredients from your pantry and your favorite essential oils, I’ll show you how to make dry shampoo.
Dry shampoo is something I reach for at least once a week. It’s the perfect pick me up for that second or third day hair. Many of us depend on it like we do coffee. Maybe you’ve recently run out, or maybe you are trying to reduce your exposure to chemicals. Either way, I’ve got you covered. Today I’m sharing how to make dry shampoo with just a few simple ingredients, and two essential oils.
I’ll be honest with you all, dry shampoo was one of the last things I “gave up” when I started using all natural beauty products. Using good dry shampoo was a non-negotiable for me. We all know it can take a little while to get used to using more natural products. Quite frankly, I didn’t want to go through that with my hair. I just wanted my dry shampoo to make my lifeless hair wonderful. If I had only known then what I know now. All natural dry shampoo works just as magically as the store bought chemical laden version, and I can feel one hundred percent ok with the ingredients. That makes it a win for me.
Jump to RecipeWhat’s so bad about the stuff in dry shampoo? Here’s what Krissy K. said over at Green & Gorgeous Organics:
“Alcohol denat
Denatured alcohol is ethanol, or ethyl alcohol, mixed with a denaturing agent. Ethanol is broadly toxic.
Talc
Talc acts as an absorbent in dry shampoo; it’s a powdered native, hydrous magnesium silicate that may have asbestos fibers in it, which poses a risk for respiratory toxicity and cancer.
Parabens
Parabens are a fragrance ingredient and a preservative. Paraben mimics estrogen, acting as a potential hormone system disruptor. You’ll find parabens in many products labeled all natural and organic.
Fragrance (perfume)
Fragrance is a known human immune toxicant and possibly a human respiratory irritant. It has been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Dry shampoos commonly come in a spray-on, aerosol container. These cans have a propellant to force chemicals out of the can and into the air. We’ve known for decades about the harmful effects of aerosol on the ozone layer and LPG is its replacement. What’s in LPG? Butane, propane, and isobutane. These are colorless, odorless gasses. Propane takes the place of oxygen in the lungs, which makes breathing difficult or impossible. These gasses can give you headaches, mood swings, nausea and not only harm you, but the people and the environment around you.”
Doesn’t sound so great, does it? I’ve got an easy solution that will take you less than 2 minutes to whip up:
Ingredients:
- 2 Tablespoons of Cornstarch or Arrowroot Powder
- 2 Tablespoons of Cocoa or Cinnamon Powder
- 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil
- 2 drops of peppermint essential oil
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients well in a glass jar.
- Sprinkle the mixture on your scalp and roots. Work it in with your fingers.
- Use a comb or a hairdryer to ensure the mixture is blended in your hair well.
That’s it! I told you it was simple. The essentials oils aren’t really necessary, but they do make the mixture smell delightful. Plus, they’ve both got great qualities for your hair. You can read more about peppermint essential oil here, and lavender here.
Another really great thing about this simple recipe is that you can totally customize it to your hair color. For mine I usually use 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder. It’s just the right amount of color without being too white. If your hair is very very light blonde you can use all cornstarch or arrowroot powder. If it’s very dark, you’ll only want to use the cocoa or cinnamon powder. It’s really that simple!

Love that you use essential oils!! I don’t think I knew that. Twins, once again. Haha! We don’t use dry shampoo but we have a spray in detangler we made that we use on our scalp and it’s got essential oils.
