How to Make Homemade Saltine Crackers
It’s soup season, and that calls for some delicious homemade saltine crackers!
There’s really nothing better on a cool autumn day than a steamy bowl of soup, and a few crackers to go along side. The problem with store bought crackers are the ingredients.
For years we’ve been ruthlessly eliminating all the fake ingredients, and GMOs. It means I’ve had to improvise a lot, and learn how to make most things from scratch. Imagine my displeasure when I read the ingredient label for our beloved compliment to a bowl of soup…you guessed it “ingredients derived from a bioengineered source”. (If you want to see a list of some common GMO ingredients check this website out: GMO Ingredient List
Not only do the store bought crackers contain GMO ingredients, but they’re full of the things we have been working so hard to eliminate. Like corn syrup, soy, and canola.
I won’t get into why these things aren’t great for our health in this post, but if you’re interested in learning more about it, I encourage you to read a little on the dangers of GMOs, soy, and canola.
More often than not, homemade versions of the food we’re accustomed to eating are fairly simple. These homemade saltine crackers are no exception.
The Ingredients:
- 1 cup of flour
- 2 TB of butter, softened
- 1/2 tsp salt plus additional for sprinkling if desired
- 5-7 TB water
The process:
- Preheat oven to 400°
- Using a fork combine the flour, salt, and butter until it resembles fine granules.
- Add in 3 TBs of water and mix well.
- Add in water 1 tablespoon at a time until the dough sticks together, but isn’t sticky.
- Lightly flour your work surface (I like to do this on wax paper to make the next step easier) and roll the dough out very thinly. About 1/8”. The dough should so thin you can see the work surface through it.
- Transfer the dough to a baking sheet. (If you’ve done this on wax paper, simple pick the wax paper up and put it on a baking sheet!) Sprinkle some extra salt on the top if desired, and poke with a fork. This will make little holes to keep the crackers from bubbling.
- Bake for about 10 minutes or until light golden brown.
- Once the crackers are baked, cut them into the desired size with a pizza cutter.
That’s it! They’re really very simple and come together so quickly. I can have a double batch of these delicious homemade saltine crackers made while the soup is simmering.
Tips & Tricks
- Add garlic powder, cayenne pepper, or herbs to this basic dough to make your crackers more exciting!
- You can brush the dough with a very thin layer of olive oil before sprinkling with salt to help it adhere better.
- These crackers tend to get soft if not used within 2-3 days.
- If you add dried herbs to the dough, you’ll want to add a little more water so the crackers aren’t overly dry.
- Using all wheat flour tends to make the dough harder to roll thinly, but it’s possible with some extra work.
