How to Make Simple DIY Pressed Flower Wall Art

Today I am sharing how I created this DIY pressed flower wall art for less than $10 a piece. I love how much charm and sophistication it added to our living room.

I have been eyeing some pressed flower wall art I recently saw on Magnolia Home’s website. It’s beautiful and so simple. The problem is that it’s $305…for ONE piece. I knew I’d at least need two for the space I had. So like any frugal loving mom, I DIYed it. Truthfully, I love how this simple DIY pressed flower wall art turned out more than the expensive version I duped. Amazing how that works out.

What I used…

How I did it…

  • The first step was finding some fresh wildflowers. We are blessed with with a plethora of wildflowers here. I had a hard time choosing between several, but I opted to use these tiny purple flowers and some small white ones. After I got my flowers picked, I brought them inside to start pressing!
  • The pressing part was so simple. Let your iron heat to medium heat without steam. Once the iron is hot, gently lay the fresh flowers on one piece of parchment paper. Cover the flowers with a second piece of parchment paper. Gently lay the iron on the parchment paper covering the flowers. Allow the iron to say on the parchment paper for 15-20 seconds. Pick up the iron, and gently place on another part of the parchment paper covering the flowers. Be sure not to slide the iron over the parchment paper. Continue this until you’ve “ironed” all of parts of the flowers.
  • After I completed that first round of ironing, I flipped my parchment paper over and repeated the same process on the other side. I continued this ironing and flipping until the flowers looked dry.
  • When the flowers were done, I spray painted the picture frames. The frames I used were a shiny black. I decided I wanted more of a pewter look. I gave them both a good coat of silver spray paint, and let it dry. Once the silver was dry, I lightly LIGHTLY over sprayed them with gold spray paint. To keep the gold light, I made sure I kept the can of paint about 18 inches away from the frames. It gave them just enough gold to make a nice pewter finish.
  • While waiting on the frames to dry I cut my poster board down to size. It took one piece for both picture frames. I had originally thought to glue the flowers on the poster board, but decided to cut down the parchment paper I used to iron them on. I’m gad I did this. It added a lot of texture, and the pressed flowers really stand out.
  • I glued the parchment paper to the poster board using an Elmer’s glue stick. I made sure to measure where the paper laid to center it in my poster board. Plus I added a little glue where I would lay the flowers on the parchment paper.
  • Once I had the glue on the parchment paper I gently pressed the flowers down and let the glue dry.
  • I reassembled the frames, and put my simple DIY Pressed flower wall art up! It was such a fun project.

Overall I am very pleased with how these pressed flowers turned out. I love to create and decorate our home. I especially love when I can do it frugally. This project definitely did just that! I’d love to hear if you’ve been DIYing. Let me know below.
