How to Shop for a Homesteader: A 2022 Homesteading Gift Guide

Have a homesteader on your gift list, and at a loss for a useful gift idea? Never fear, I’ve rounded up my favorite homesteading tools in this homesteading gift guide!

With less than a month until Christmas, you may find yourself scrambling to find that perfect thing for that one person. I think we’ve all been there a time or two. I find myself there every year. It’s usually a dad that has me stumped. The good news is, whether you’re shopping for a homesteader or a dad, I think you’ll find something in this homesteading gift guide that will be “just the thing”.

When it comes to gifts homesteaders, like myself, are usually pretty easy to please. Canning jars, gardening supplies, and a couple good books can really make us happy. On the other hand, we can be a little intimidating to shop for, too. That cup with cocoa in it won’t impress someone who can make a batch of homemade hot cocoa in seconds, right? I promise you if anyone bought me any of these things in this homesteading gift guide I would be thrilled. Consider it your fail proof guide to the homesteader’s heart.

Gifts for Outside

• Work Gloves – There is nothing worse than cold, wet hands when you’re off feeding animals in the winter. These winter waterproof gloves save the day…and a homesteader can never have enough gloves! I have these lightweight work gloves that I love if you’re looking for something more year-round use.
• Buckets – Buckets are invaluable around the homestead. From hauling water, feed, and grain, to storing tools, extra supplies, or bulk food supplies, you just can’t have too many buckets! Trust me on this, any homesteader would gladly welcome a few new buckets. Especially if they have lids!
• Zip Ties – So many uses, so handy to have a round. Grab a pack or two and watch your homesteaders face light up 😉
• Flashlight – My husband is the KING of good, bright flashlights, and he gave this one his seal of approval. A good flashlight is a must for late night barn checks!
• Seeds – You can never have too many seeds. Bonus if you buy cool ones like these Noodle Beans or Zucchini.
• Seed Starting Kit – These are so handy, and will be appreciated by a novice homesteader or an old pro.
• Wool Socks – Second to my hands being cold, my feet being cold is the worst. Good warm, tough socks are a must. These are American made!
• Gathering Basket – Much like a bucket, I use baskets everyday around here. Especially harvest time. Thrift stores are a great place to look for a nice, big basket, or you can order a brand new one like the one I’ve linked.
• Boot scraper – Homesteads are a messy place. Mud is the name of the game in the winter here. Keeping as much as I can outside is key. Boot scrapers do the trick.
• Kindling Splitter – if your homesteader has a wood stove, this kindling splitter would be a real game changer!

Gifts for Inside

• Mason Jars – It’s every homesteaders dream to have an endless supply of mason jars in various sized. Grabbing a case or two for the homesteader on your list is always a good idea! It’s also a fun treat to have some of the pretty jars like the ones I linked.
• Lids and Rings – That endless supply of mason jars will require an endless supply of lids and rings.
• Fermenting Weights – You can never have too many. You can also pick up this fermenting starter kit. It’s what I used to successfully make sauerkraut the first time. I still use and love it.
• Wooden Spoons – They’re my favorite kitchen tool. While you’re at it, whip up some of this easy wooden spoon wax to go along with them.
• Flour Sack Towels – These simple towels are the best!
• Cast Iron – Be it a Dutch oven, or a simple skillet, cast iron is every homesteader’s favorite.
• Butter Churn – Sure you can make butter in a mason jar by shaking it for several minutes, but this churn makes it a breeze. Plus, it’s pretty to look at.
• Rada Knives – I LOVE my set of Rada Knives.
• Knife Sharpener – A necessary tool that every homesteading kitchen needs
• Soap Making Kit – This is great for all ages. Homesteading kids especially love crafting their own soaps with adult supervision, of course.
• Candle Making Kit – Homesteading kids also love crafting their own candles. 😉
• Sugar Scrub – This is my all-time favorite scrub for dry winter hands. It’s one of the easiest things to whip up for a last minute gift, too!

There are probably a million more things I could add to this list. For now, I’ll stop right there. Hopefully it was enough to get your wheels turning and check a few gifts off your list.
