How to Turn a Dresser into a DIY Dining Room Hutch

I’ve often admired the beautiful dining room hutches I’ve seen

and have dreamed about how I could DIY one. Follow along as I turn a dresser into a DIY Dining Room Hutch.

Have you ever been scrolling social media or Pinterest and seen a beautiful dining room hutch that made you stop your scroll? Me. Too! I’ve often dreamed of how I could create a DIY Dining Room hutch.

One day while antiquing in Amish Country, I stumbled upon the most darling shelf that had been hand built, and only cost $8. You better believe I snatched it up quickly.

For quite some time it sat in the garage sad and lonely. Truthfully, I didn’t intend for it to be the top part of a hutch. I had originally thought it would make really cute open shelves in the kitchen, and it totally would have. That was a big project though with removing existing upper cabinetry, and I knew I’d have to have help with it. When I got the idea to build a dining room hutch of sorts, I decided I’d use the shelf for the top and started looking for a console or sofa table to use as the base.

Eli was cleaning out the garage and asked about an old dresser we had in there. It was actually the one I used when he was a baby! We’d held onto for such a long time because it was a really nice, solid wood dresser. He measured it, and wouldn’t you know, it was the exact length as the shelf! It was meant to be.

What I did

It was really a super simple project. I simply cleaned both pieces really well and sat the shelf unit on top of the dresser. The shelf is made with 1x8s simply nailed together. Someone has cut the detail out with a jig saw, I would imagine, and tacked into the front of the 1×8 frame.

Once the pieces were clean and dry, I applied a few coats of a grab ‘n go paint from Wal-Mart in the color farm fresh. I had previously used this color to paint the trim in the dining room and knew I’d love it on this DIY dining room hutch. I was right! It’s the perfect color for it. Green is my favorite color, and I’ve been looking for ways to incorporate it more in the house.

Once the paint was dry, Nick cut me out a back from a piece of beadboard we had in the garage. I spray painted it white. When it was dry, I simply pinned it to the back of the top of my new hutch, and voila. A brand new, DIY dining room hutch was made!

A simple tip for shelf styling…

I was so excited to get to display my favorite Henn Pottery dishes. My mom collected this pottery when I was a little girl, and I’ve always loved it. Many years ago, we found them on close out in a Big Lots store, and I was able to get a whole set for a fraction of what they cost new!

While I knew I wanted to display those plates, I also knew I needed to balance it out with some different color besides green and white. As you see, I am using copper/old book brown. 😉 One of the best tips for styling shelves is this: Zig zag the accent color on the shelves you’re decorating. This simple trick has never failed me!

I’m really happy with the result. It’s even better than I hoped. I’m glad I got the dining room done before the garden work starts. We all know I won’t be inside then. 🙂
