The Farmhouse – Before and After

Good morning, and HAPPY FRIDAY! I hope you guys have had such a great week so far. If you follow along on Instagram you know that I lost ALL my blog content and subscribers from last year. Since I am essentially starting over I thought we’d start at the beginning and do some before and after posts. Today I plan to share the kitchen!

It’s so easy for me to forget how far this little country kitchen has come. It’s really hard to believe it’s the same place.

When we first looked at the house the whole kitchen had flooded, and was in the process of being completely gutted and redone. It had no cabinets or flooring. It was just a ceiling, some fresh drywall, and a whole lot of dust. The previous owners chose oak cabinets, and had the walls painted a very buttery yellow. There was very little cabinet or countertop space. We added new cabinets and replaced all the countertops with the black ones we have now. (The countertops were a country blue, and quite stained!) Fast forward a few years, and I got the itch to paint over the yellow. It was pretty dirty, and I was amazed at how dark the yellow actually made the kitchen feel.

This little strip of cabinets was all we had when we moved in. Adding the new cabinets doubled my countertop and storage space!

Let me apologize in advance for the dark grainy images!

We went from buttery yellow to Navajo white, which happened to be a nice shade of cream. One project led to another, as they tend to do around here, and before you know it I took the plunge and painted the cabinets. GUYS…I was scared to death!! I was pretty convinced I was ruining my entire kitchen half way through, but three years later it’s the best thing I’ve done in there yet!! I had a whole post dedicated to how I painted them, and what I used. Perhaps that’s something I’ll rewrite soon!

We added all of the cabinets you see to the right of the kitchen. When we moved in that was just a big empty space.

I went through a brief phase of decorating with VERY bright colors. I enjoyed it for a little bit, but there was absolutely nothing timeless or classic about it. I quickly got tired of it, and fell in love with cottage style and all things white and neutral…. You guys know the rest of the story!

we ended up removing several wall cabinets, and taking out the breakfast bar. It opened the kitchen up SO MUCH!
We added a bead board back splash, and I painted it Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. I loved the cottagey vibe it gave the house.

As much as I loved the sea salt, and the cozy vibe it gave the house I decided it was time for “*another* change, and painted EVERYTHING white…it still seems to be happening here. 🙂

The little wall where the breakfast nook was is the perfect spot for my large crocks.

We just recently took down the cabinets from above the sink, and replaced all of the mismatched appliances. Talk about a huge difference!!

There are still many things I dream of doing in there, but going back through the old pictures was so much fun! I hope you enjoyed seeing the transformation as much as I enjoyed doing it! Thanks so much for stopping by our farmhouse!

  1. I love it!! You did good! I also love that you hang up your cast iron. I started doing that a few years ago. No sense putting them away when they always end up back on the stove. ?

  2. Its crazy how different it looks. I had totally forgotten the different looks. Especially the yellow.
