What makes rug timeless you may wonder? The “classics” are always timeless…a few examples of some classic rugs are Persians, Kilims, Moroccan, stripes, plaids, and simple patterns. When a design feels new or trendy, you’re best to steer clear…unless that’s what you’re going for, of course.

Another quality of a timeless is rug is obviously a beautiful neutral rug. Colors go in and out of style, but grays, white, creams, black and blues are always in. Solid rugs, like sisal and jute, are always timeless.

I’ve rounded up ten of my favorite timeless rugs from Amazon to share with you today. I’m also sharing a few tips and tricks for choosing the right rug for your room below.

Tips for Choosing the Right Timeless Rugs

Color is Key.

  • Color is Key. This is the most obvious place to start. If your room is already furnished be mindful of which colors will work with the furniture you already have. Rooms with a lot of color and pattern will probably work best with neutral tones or a single color. If your room isn’t furnished be sure to consider how the rug will work with your walls, flooring, and ceiling. Rugs can either really stand out, or really blend in. You choose!

Choose a Pattern You Love

  • Choose a Pattern. If your room already has a lot of pattern, you may want to choose a rug that is solid, or made from a natural material like jute. If you’re starting from scratch consider how you want the room to feel, and how it needs to function. (You can read more about that here in How to Edit Your Home.) Do you want the rug to be the focal point, or just add a layer of warmth to the room? Pattern will be key.

Pick the Perfect Size

  • Pick the Perfect Size. An area rug that is too small is one of the most common decorating mistakes. Ideally, you want the rug to cover the majority of a room, but if you’re using it as an anchor for your furniture you want to make sure at least the front legs of your couch are placed on the rug.

Decide on the pile height.

  • Decide on the pile height. Do you want a low, medium, or high pile rug? Low pile rugs are often more durable and easier to clean. Rugs with a higher pile are softer under foot, and add more warmth and texture to a room. A room that gets a lot of traffic will benefit from a low pile rug.

Maintenance Requirements.

  • How much maintenance are you willing to do? All rugs need some maintenance. Regular vacuuming and rotating will usually do the trick for most. There are a few rugs that are machine washable now, which may be a great option if you have small children or pets. Other rugs may benefit from a good old fashioned rug beating. Other higher pile rugs may have to be professionally cleaned. Be sure to read the specifics about the rug you choose!

As always, thank you so much for spending a tiny part of your day with me.

  1. I have 1 place in my house for a rug like this. It is in front of the coffee bar, in the basement. Hunter found a cute dog rug and put it there instead 😆
